The Scoop on Sculptra®

When it comes to non-invasive treatments, few services can compete with the popularity and safety of dermal fillers—the most popular being hyaluronic-acid-based formulas. But, biostimulatory fillers, a category that’s often overlooked, is finally getting its moment thanks to Sculptra®. This seemingly do-it-all solution restores facial volume, fills fine lines and wrinkles, and improves skin’s appearance immediately and over time. There’s no surprise Sculptra® is on track to become aesthetic medicine’s next big thing.

What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is a biostimulatory filler akin to Radiesse® and Bellafill. In 2004, this injectable was FDA-approved for its ability to increase collagen production in HIV-positive patients experiencing lipoatrophy, or extreme fat loss. This dramatic loss can result in sunken cheeks, deep folds, and visible indentations—making Sculptra® the perfect solution.

While Sculptra® has been used for years off-label to rejuvenate the skin, the FDA recently expanded Sculptra®’s approved use to treat fine lines and wrinkles. This means that Sculptra® is now comparable to hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane, and is available for anyone who is looking to smooth and add volume to the face for a more youthful appearance.

How does Sculptra® work?

Sculptra® is an injectable filler that restores facial volume deficiencies, for both cosmetic and medical uses. Sculptra® works by creating a biostimulatory effect within the treated tissues. This stimulates our own collagen production and allows the body to naturally volumize the treatment area to address deep-set lines, creases, and folds.

The key ingredient in this potent gel formula is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a powerful biocompatible synthetic substance that stimulates collagen production. Because of PLLA’s ability to jump-start the body's natural collagen production process, the results of facial volume last longer than popular hyaluronic-acid-based fillers. Once injected, the body’s collagen synthesis starts to progress over the next twelve weeks to plump the skin and soften the look of fine lines.

What are common treatment areas?

Since the FDA expanded Sculptra®'s approval, medical practitioners are now able to safely and legally inject to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and volume loss. Sculptra® is also commonly used to create noticeable improvements to smile lines, chin dimpling, and marionette lines.

The “Sculptra® glow” is a secondary, yet equally desirable effect that refers to the visible improvement in skin quality—notably skin tone and texture—after treatment. It’s also known to work wonders on facial indentations and acne scars thanks to its ability to boost collagen levels which heals the deep complexion imperfections.

While Sculptra® can effectively add volume to several areas of the face, it isn’t recommended for use as a lip or undereye filler.

Who can perform this treatment?

Physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and other trained medical personnel who have received proper training and licensure to practice injecting Sculptra® in their state can administer the treatment.

How can clients prep for treatment?

Sculptra® preparation is minimal: Prior to treatment, it is important to thoroughly cleanse your skin to ensure it is free of oil, bacteria, and any traces of makeup. To reduce the risk of bruising, you can also begin taking Arnica supplements two-to-three days before treatment.

How long is the typical treatment time?

Before your Sculptra® service, you’ll need to consult with your medical provider. He or she will ask about your aesthetic goals to determine if Sculptra® is right for you. Then, together, you  can decide the best course of action, including how many treatments will be needed to achieve the results you are looking for.

A single session can take up to an hour, allotting plenty of time for the injector to apply a topical numbing cream and allow it to take effect. In the meantime, your injector will mix the Sculptra® solution with a numbing agent, lidocaine, to ensure the treatment is as painless as possible. Treatment time varies, but injections generally take ten-to-twenty minutes to complete.

Depending on the severity of volume loss, you may get the results you want after a single treatment. Most commonly, the average treatment requires three sessions with each session occurring every six weeks. Your full results won’t be visible for six-to-twelve weeks, which is the time it takes for your skin’s collagen to properly synthesize. Best of all, your results can last up to two years.

What is the recommended post-treatment care?

Once your session is over, be sure to ice the treated area throughout the day to manage swelling. Continue icing regularly over the following week or until swelling subsides.

To avoid filler displacement, refrain from booking any facial massages for up to two weeks after your last session. Lastly, be sure to avoid excessive sun exposure, UV radiation, and strenuous exercise.

Who is the ideal candidate?

The ideal candidate for Sculptra® is any client who would like to address volume loss in their face. The largest client demographic for Sculptra® are women in their forties, though clients in their thirties have begun getting Sculptra® as a preventative treatment to keep their collagen production thriving.

A preventative vial every two years is ideal for some, while older clients or those with more significant volume loss may need a series of treatments on a yearly basis.

What are the benefits?

One benefit of Sculptra® is how natural the results tend to look compared to hyaluronic-acid-based fillers. Since this treatment works by encouraging our body to naturally boost collagen, clients are less likely to look “overfilled.”

Sculptra® activates your skin’s natural collagen production, allowing your body to gradually create a more youthful appearance. Unlike other fillers that provide instant dramatic results, Sculptra® works slowly to create beautiful long-term results. It’s truly the only filler of its kind that enables your body to replenish lost volume on its own.

How long does the treatment last?

Sculptra® is considered to be a semi-permanent treatment. Compared to hyaluronic acid fillers which last six-to-twelve months, Sculptra®’s results can last well over two years, especially after the second series of treatments. Many clients opt for Sculptra® services knowing that it’s a low-maintenance treatment that will leave them looking beautiful for years to come.
